ShowYouSuck - Red Cup Salute

Even though I’m Chicago born and raised, my current residence in the southern regions of America has cause me to be a little late in identifying the new young talent coming out of Chicago. After frequently seeing the name ShowYouSuck listed as the opener for my favorite political yet danceable hip-hop group, BBU, I knew I had to check out him out. I was pleasantly surprised with his sophomore album, Mo Slices Mo Problems, which features standout production by Chicago’s own Flosstradamus and Mike Jaxx. Matched by only ‘Clearance’ and ‘Healthy’, I consider ‘Red Cup Salute’ the best song on the album. It reminded me of the transition Danny Brown’s album took during the sequential tracks “DNA”, “Nosebleeds”, and “Party All The Time”. ShowYouSuck began the song with the PSA, ”If you think this song is about you, then it definitely is”, which is followed by a conscious tale on party life. He tells the story of a party girl who abuses drugs and alcohol. Instead another song about taking advantage of drunk girls, ShowYouSuck addresses the prevalence of drinking and driving over a smooth soul beat. The entire album is a must listen and due his recurrent spots on the hottest hip-hop shows in Chicago and his national blog buzz, I know it’s only months until we will see him getting higher visibility and a record deal.
